Role Playing Games/Gaming/Wargaming

I have been gaming in some form or another since 1979. I started with AD&D 1st Edition. But it was not until January 1986 that I became a Gamer! It was at a friend’s birthday party. We played Marvel Super Heroes (the original yellow box version). I was playing a Hi-Tech Hero named Vortech (the Unseen). The Judge was in rare form. It was that night on which I decided to actually buy a RPG.

A few days later (after scrapping up the money), I bought MSH (and a huge lot of comics for research). I had the rules memorized by the end of the day. We played at lunch and during recess. It was many weeks before I actually “Judged” a game. That summer, the Advanced MSH came out. More powers, more options, more fun.

The next year was when my “group” started to play D&D for real. OD&D to be exact (the last version of the Red Set). We quickly added the other sets and even played a mish mash of OD&D and AD&D 1st Ed. until most of us had the core 1st Ed. About this time I tired out Warhammer Fantasy Battles. Then Warhammer 40k came out. Over the next 10 years we played so many different systems, I have forgotten more than 90% of them. Mainly it was some form of D&D, Rolemaster, Star Wars/D6 System, Amber DRPG or some version of Warhammer.

I was out of the gaming scene for a few years until just before D&D 3ed came out. I stumbled unto a link for Eric Noah's Unofficial DnD3e site (now EN World) at Amazon.com. I hung out there for a few months, then dnd3e's chat moved to psionics.net (now otherworlders.org), where I work as a system oper (off and on).

My preferred systems/settings, in no particular order: D6 System/Star Wars, Warhammer FRPG/Warhammer 40k, LotR Strategy/Legends, HARP, BESM/Tri-Stat, CODA, Godlike/Wild Talents/ORE, Amber DRPG,  Fudge and D&D 3.x Ed./d20 System.

I founded Toreishi Design Studio to bring forth games that were inspired by this "misspent" youth.

Comics

I grew up reading comics so it should not be surprising that I like the comic format (especially graphic novels/collected works). Most of my early reading was Marvel, DC, Disney and Archie comics with a few strange ones in-between (mainly movie adaptations).

It was not until Transformers comics came out, that I started to collect (as opposed to just reading). Then I started to play Marvel Super Heroes (see Gaming) and that made me in to a Comic Book Kid. Luckily that phase of my life only lasted for about a year (okay, two!). One too many Mutant Wars burned me out. I did continue to collect a few series/issues after that.

It was not until adulthood that I got to read the better comics (Cerebus, Bone, early Crow, early TMNT and a few others). Then I read Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics (and its sequels). Around 2000, I started to read Manga. I have decided I like the B&W style of Manga/Cerebus/Early TMNT more than the current trend of badly done computer colored comics.

Television

Like Comics, I grew up with television. Having grown up watching cartoons, I see nothing wrong with watching them now as an adult (though there are many I would say are just too kiddie for me to watch). Anime is my preferred cartoon type with Sci-Fi being my preferred live action type (okay, game shows too).

Film

Cable and DVD have corrupted my ability to see movies in the theater. Why waste the time and trouble in line and get ripped off, when I can watch it at home when I am ready (and I only have to wait a max of 6 months for most movies). My preferred movie types are Fantasy, Sci-Fi and Animated. I collect Animation Cels.

Books

I read too much! Magazines, books, websites and almost any other source of words I can find.

Martial Arts

I have off and on for over 29 years practiced a martial art that is totally unique to me. I call it "Mugen Mugen". It has been made up from many different and diverse sources. Some include: Live Action “Combat Groups” such as the Society for Creative Anachronism and the Medieval Mayhem Society; real Martial Artists; and theft of ideas from books, magazines, TV and movies. My preferred weapons are the Chinese Broadsword, Katana, Staff and Bastard/Two-Handed Sword. My preferred style is two weapons.

Jesus Christ

I was raised in a Christian home but like most people, I drifted away to worldly cares. The last few years have really opened my eyes to what Jesus did and why He did it. If you are not a Christian, I beg of you to look into His gospel and ask Him into your life!
